Corporate Social Responsibility

As one of the frontrunners in the Artificial Insemination cattle breeding industry, we have an aim and responsibility to achieve better social and environmental conditions.

We recognise that business activities have a crucial impact on the development of society, especially in the agricultural areas where you, as our customer, operate. For that reason, wherever there is a natural link with VikingGenetics, we want to play a proactive role.

Our desire to serve you with quality products and solutions that meet sustainability standards is always the priority of our business activities. As we are a farmer cooperative, we know how important it is for you to be a part of the solution for the biggest global challenges.

Everybody has a role to play

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals (officially known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs). These goals have the potential to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality, and addressing the urgency of climate change.

Guided by the goals, the United Nations states that it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society, and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone.

The Global Goals simply cannot be achieved without businesses. Companies are making a vital contribution to accelerating progress towards the Global Goals through their core operations, financial commitments, employee networks, consumer-facing platforms, and high-level influence.

Every company and every employee has a role to play in creating a more peaceful and prosperous future for people and the planet.

Our commitment to the SDG´s

VikingGenetics is already implementing six out of the 17 SDGs, all of them relevant to the industry where we operate.

  • # 2 Zero hunger: We are committed to achieve food security and promote sustainable farming through our innovative breeding for healthy, efficient, and productive cows with low use of antibiotics and hormones.
  • # 3 Good health and well-being: Our employee's health and benefits are based on concrete protocols and policies. Besides, we strive to provide dairy and beef farmers with genetic solutions to increase animal health because healthy cattle give you more free time to spend with your family.
  • # 8 Decent work and economic growth: We have a strong ambition to develop our leading groups and strengthen competencies among all our employees. At the same time, our strength to grow lies in our customer-oriented service that forms the base of our daily activities.
  • #9 Industry, innovation, and infrastructure: We have a clear strategy to support and invest in Research & Development. We have signed various agreements with other research entities to achieve benefits for farming in general. We use cutting-edge technology for research.
  • #12 Responsible consumption and production: Specific actions have been taken within the company, and a more conscious mindset has risen among employees regarding the use of resources; we have minimized the use of plastic, paper, energy, and traveling, among other concrete actions.
  • #13 Climate Action: We are leading an investigation to find a formula that leads to a breeding value for reduced methane emissions in dairy cattle. At the same time, we are exploring ways to breed for a more climate-friendly cow where feed efficiency is a keystone.

Business with ethical principals

The United Nations Global Compact is a non-binding UN pact to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies and to report on their implementation. It has a framework for businesses, stating 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.

The Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative with 13,000 corporate participants and other stakeholders in over 170 countries. VikingGenetics is also committed to and already implementing the principles included in the UNGC.

Complying with The Code of Good Practices

In a society increasingly interested in health, welfare, environmental and other aspects of animal production, animal breeders must take responsibility for their part of the animal production chain.

Code EFABAR is a voluntary code of good practice in support of responsible farm animal breeding for a sustainable and healthy food supply chain.

Since 2006, the Code EFABAR has been revised and updated every three years. VikingGenetics received its certification from Code EFABAR in 2017 meaning we are compliant with the guidelines on health, animal welfare, and use of natural resources established in the code.
