Robust and fertile ProCROSS cows for organic system

GAEC de Kergoat in France has 85 ProCROSS cows that are extremely well adapted to their organic grazing system.

Joël Quere, associate of the GAEC de Kergoat in France, explains their breeding strategy: “We wish to develop the grazing as much as possible, without giving any concentrates or minerals”.

Several factors allow this strategy. First, the geographical situation of the farm, in the centre of Finistère. Secondly, a large investment has been made to facilitate access to the different plots of the farm. Finally, the ProCROSS genetics started about 10 years ago from a Pie Rouge herd.

“Our cows walk 3 km per day, so we pay attention to the feet and legs. Another selection criterion is solids. Among the bulls they use, we find Neutrino and Ilanne for Montbéliarde, and VR Vilperi, VR Farnam and VR Vario for VikingRed.

“Our ProCROSS crosses are robust, fertile animals that are extremely well adapted to our organic grazing system.”

Herd facts:

  • Organic breeding since 2019
  • 105 ha in grass
  • 85 ProCROSS cows
  • 525,000 litres of milk delivered
  • €476.95 gross margin
